Valuation

Valuation is an independent estimate of the value of an ownership interest (linked to what we value page) in a business, partnership, debt instrument, intangible asset, technology, contract, or legal claim at a specific point in time. The valuation process requires substantial research and analysis and the experience and judgment of a seasoned valuation professional.

Valuations combine financial, economic, and market analysis with the strategic understanding of a the asset being valued. A valuation takes into account the unique circumstances specific to the asset being valued along with the purpose of the valuation to determine the value of the interest.

Unlike an appraisal of jewelry or real estate, business valuation usually requires consideration of assets that often do not have a physical representation. These assets include customer lists, brand names, personal relationships, and many others. Additionally, business valuations often requires complex analyses to incorporate the risk and return potential for the many different assets that work together to create value.
